"I am astounded at how long it takes to discover... for the first time, the things I have learned... over and over again all my life." There is a Hole In My Sidewalk
Just as a bicep curl requires both the concentric (lifting) and eccentric (lowering) motion to grow muscles, learning is a product of both forgetting and remembering. It's just that in forgetting, we usually beat ourselves up.
"I've been working on this for weeks, and I still keep making the same error..."
"How many times is it going to take me messing this up to remember to do it correctly?!?!"
But beating ourselves up over forgetting is like only lifting the weight and never lowering it, all the while thinking we're inadequate because our muscles won't grow.
Forgetting is essential. Forgetting allows us the opportunity to remember, which rewires our mind and builds new neural pathways that eventually lead to learning. Eventually, this leads to a place of living the learning where we automatically remember.
Remember, forgetting is necessary for the process of learning.
